Arpegia

Update: Jan 5th, 2010

Arpegia is a web site that I put together over the course of several months. It is the beginnings of a web based RPG, with influences brought in from other web games I’ve come across as well as MUDs and whatnot that I used to play.

It is not a finished game, though there is plenty to make it playable. Here’s a rough list of what does work:

  • Locations, rooms and navigating between them.
  • Stories – narratives that are kicked off when you enter certain locations and associated with a certain region (collection of locations), completed by undertaking linked encounters within that region.
  • Quests – objectives that span multiple encounters and possibly regions.
  • Encounters – combat and social, involving pitting abilities and stats against opponents, or making conversation choices.
  • Abilities and Triggers – Setting up how your character undergoes a combat situation, with certain abilities triggering under certain conditions.
  • Character progression – Completing encounters/quests/stories results in gaining experience, which advances your character levels, which gives points to spend on gaining and raising abilities and stats.
  • Equipment – Acquire equipment from battles, equip it in any manner you see fit. Some items provide stat bonuses and other magical effects.
  • Equipment improvement – At certain locations (usually the same as locations where you can train your abilities) you can opt to fight one off battles to improve equipment.
  • Puzzle box ‘beam of light’ mini game – complete puzzle boxes for extra rewards.
  • Communication – a chat box offers live chat to other players online from the corner of the screen. Chat can be restricted to your current location, and you can see who’s present in the same room as you. A basic forum is also included.

Here’s a list of what’s unfinished or (in some cases) not implemented at all, despite best intentions for the future:

  • Guilds/Clans, allowing characters to join together in groups, with private chat.
  • Player/Clan combat.
  • More abilities, equipment and locations.

With all that said, the game in its current form can be found at http://www.arpegia.co.uk. Feel free to give it a go. Please be warned that it is not meant to be a finished product, and no official support of any kind is offered.
